Tibetan Software Archive

This page is out of date and needs an update badly (last interesting update was in June 1998).

This is a small archive of tibetan software that I collected for myself. This page is maintained as a roadmap for this archive (but it may be out of phase).

The archive is not intended to be complete and up-to-date but if you know about any software that you think would be of interest to me and users of this archive drop me a note. And don't hesitate to send me your comments (the link to my home page is at the bottom).

Tibetan for Batch Formatters

CTAN:/language/tibetan/
Several packages to typeset Tibetan with famous TeX.
Tibetan for Omega
Omega is an extension to TeX for multilingual text processing. This package was developed by Norbert Preining.
LoutTib (gzipped tar, 171K)
Tibetan kit for Lout. This is written by Valeriy Ushakov (i.e. me) to use Tibetan font from TibKey distribution with my favorite text formatter. It contains the font in Type1 format, transliterator and supporting Lout code. You are encouraged to try it and report your opinion and suggestions. You can preview the documentation (gzipped ps, 100K). Appendix A of this document contains tibetan text of sum.cu.pa.

Macintosh

MacOS Tibetan Language Kit (external link)
A free Language Kit for MacOS by the Otani University Shin Buddhist Comprehensive Research Institute in Kyoto, Japan.

MS Windows

Software by Tibetan Computer Company
Download free reader program that comes with high quality fonts.
TibKey (zip, 181K)
Developed by Christopher Fynn. Contains a TrueType Tibetan font and a keyboard handler. With this software you can use Tibetan in any Windows application. Only works with Windows 9.x! The font has been GPL'ed!

MS DOS

cgatib (zip, 54K)
This is obsolete (are there any CGA still around?)
Mani (zip, 23K)
Animates a rotating MANI mantra on your screen. This might be not very useful, but it's beautiful.
T (arj, 825K)
Tibetan-English dictionary by Jim Valby. It is based on the Das' dictionary but contains many Dzogchen technical terms you would hardly find elsewhere. I wrote a separate page devoted to this dictionary. Check it for further details.
ttps (zip, 42K)
Tibetan Texts Publishing System (v3.00; July, 1987). Supports several matrix printers (most of them are obsolete now, I suppose).

ACIP Information

A good, but now somewhat out-of-date survey of asian-language computer programs available for PC's and Mac's can be found in the release 3 documentation of the Asian Classics Input Project in the section on Update on Available Asian-Language Computer Programs.
